Hollywood remakes of world cinema

Recently I have noticed a number of Swedish movies being remade by Hollywood, the first question I have to ask is why? What was the problem with the originals? There was the option to watch them in English if you didn't want to sit through a film that wasn't in English or have the English subtitles on. The most recent film to be remade by Hollywood is Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo originally released in 2009, other examples include Let me in a remake of the Let the right one in which was released in 2008.

From a personal point of view I fail to understand the reasoning behind redoing something when there is nothing wrong with the original. The only reason that I can see for remaking the films that I've previously mentioned is arrogance, they feel that they can do it better because they throw a load of money into it and put in some big names, all this glitz is not necessary the success of the original shows that.
