Not sure if it is just my family but no sooner is christmas over they start asking what you want for you birthday, bearing in mind my birthday isn't until September. This is so they can spread the cost of birthdays and christmas throughout the year Given that usually at the time I have absolutely no idea I have found a solution, set up a wish list on a website such as Amazon and just add things as you see them that way when they ask I just point them in the direction of the website. This has worked in the sense that it is one less thing that can be a source of conflict. Not only that but if one month I feel like treating myself I just go on an select the item I want, plus it's alot easier when it comes to the kids and their birthdays and christmas as any parent will tell you, people have a thing about buying in excess for kids so they have so much stuff it takes over the house.
Some people may see this approach as rather cold, however if you have ever been asked a question and your mind goes blank you will know how I feel everytime somebody asks me what I me or the kids want for birthdays or christmas.
