At the moment my four year old daughter is starting to learn how to read. This brings back memories of when I was taught to read; at school we used the Letterland programme and the Oxford Reading Tree books. Now nearly twenty years later Letterland has been replaced by Jolly Phonics but the Oxford Reading Tree remains with the same characters from when I was little. Many generations have grown up with Biff, Chip, Kipper and Floppy the dog.
Whilst I understand the concept of phonics the methodology in Jolly phonics baffles me, this may be due to the fact that it is a new teaching method. So it looks like I will be learning something new with Lucie, much to her amusement.
I suspect that for someone who is starting from scratch will find it easier to grasp Jolly Phonics. However it is to use an old saying “teaching an old dog new tricks” for those who have already learnt to read using a different system but are now having to learn to use the new system in order to help their child to learn to read. I suspect that it will have changed again by the time my youngest daughter starts school in a few years.
