Addiction to virtual reality

Everyone needs to escape from time to time but some people can take it a little too far and actually become addicted in the virtual reality they have created. This is particularly common in individuals suffering with mental health issues.

Whilst it is not a widely recognised addiction like substance abuse it is still a very real issue and needs to be addressed. At present as far as I am aware the only treatments for this addiction are counseling and CBT. The worrying part about this addiction is that it is affecting a lot of people and they are not even aware of it and a large number of those addicted are children.

I should at this point, clarify there are people who are classed as gamers who spend large portions of their free time playing computer games; the difference between these people and addicts is that gamers are able to differentiate between the two realities and are able to function properly within society.
